There’s nothing like music to get your creative juices flowing. Whether it’s blasting the latest offering on your car radio, dancing in a jam-packed crowd at a concert or simply humming along to a beautiful classical piece, there’s one thing I know for sure – I always feel inspired afterwards.
On a particularly grey and rainy winter’s day last year, I was in need of some inspiration and as I turned my full attention to a song on the radio, I suddenly had an idea for a poetry workshop; a way to get inspired by other people’s words and in particular, their lyrics. I spent the rest of the day noting down lyrics that resonated with me; a line from a song on the radio, another from a song being played in the local shop. It was fun and spiced up my normal routine as I became more aware of the music around me. I typed each line that caught my attention into the notes on my phone and by the end of the day, I had a poem.
So, with a disclaimer to ensure you that I am not publishing this poem as my own, rather as the result of a warm up activity to my writing, I include the poem below. And before I go, I offer up a challenge – go through your day with a heightened awareness of the music around you and grab a line from each song as you do! This might be from a song being played in the supermarket as you pass through, the muffled lyrics coming from the headphones of the person next to you on the tube, or even from your very own music collection. Wherever the music comes from, listen intentionally, jot down any words or phrases that really sing to you (pun intended!) and see what story your collection has to tell by the end of the day.
I’d love to know how it works for you in the comments below and in the meantime, happy listening!
What’s love got to do with it?
What is love?
You’ve got to get up and try, try, try.
Tonight the music seems so loud,
What are you waiting for?
I wana dance with somebody,
I’ll see you in the future,
This is the rhythm of my life.
This love has taken its toll on me,
I wana know what love is,
I want you to show me.
Hold on for one more day
‘Cause you gotta have faith.
Heaven is a place on Earth.
